United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recognized 580 biosphere reserves worldwide. Biosphere reserves are places that seek to reconcile conservation of biological and cultural diversity and economic and social development through partnerships between people and nature, they are ideal to test and demonstrate innovative approaches to sustainable development from local to international scales.

On food processing.

Felix in action

Income generating activities

FAO estimated that about 71 percent of Ethiopia’s population is under the age of 30 years, in a country where traditional agriculture is the single largest sources of income making it a country where the potential workforce far outbalances job creation. As a result, there is a lack of opportunities for young people to make a living in their hometowns, leading these youths to migrate to other countries in the hopes of finding decent employment. The agriculture that will attracts the youth will have to be profitable, competitive, and dynamic: value addition to agriculture production and processing of agriculture products.

Agriculture value addition for the production as well as for processing involves large number of horizontal and vertical stakeholder’s interaction. These activities encompass (1) the producers that grow and trade agriculture commodities such as coffee, oil seeds, fruits, herbs, spices and honey; (2) the processors, both primary and value added ones that process, manufacture, and market food and non-food products such as jam, juice, dry fruits, flour and bread; (3) the distributors, which include wholesalers and retailers that market and sell food; (4) the consumers that shop, purchase, and consume food; Finally, (5) governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and regulators that monitor the entire food value chain from producer to consumer.

Eljojofe e.v. activities has been developing with active NGO’s in the region bottom up incubation centres for processing in the community level products. Often this project stay as demonstration projects. Eljojofe is now developing a new concept note that establishes a central management that will provide capacity building services for the incubation centres.

Training

Eljojofe e.v. facilitates the Ecopia training skim in the communities, it provides training for rural farmers which encompass entrepreneurship, leadership as well as processing training. The aim of the training is to empower rural farmers at the base of the pyramid with the necessary skills and know-how to process their organic fruits and vegetables in a way that high quality products are created which fulfil international quality standards as well as to understand and meet the needs of the highly demanding target market in an appropriate way.

The training is not only train the farmers which are part of its value chain but also students, local stakeholders as well as interested public. This community-focused training approach should easen acceptance among the farmers and also accelerate the spread of knowledge in local communities. To conduct such trainings, Eljojofe partners with several local and international NGOs, cooperatives, Ecopia, associations as well as local universities which have proven sucess in reaching out to rural farmers in selecting and conducting the training throughout Ethiopia. Every trained farmer is enabled to train other farmers - this train of trainers approach contributes to the sustainability of the training programme.

On hand tourism

Since February 2015 we have started a project on Community-based interactive Ecotourism for promotion of conservation in Ethiopian Biosphere Reserves (CIEPCEB).

Within our communities we will organise the accommodations within our communities in international standards (with sleeping bags and clean bed), Organic food and the tour using our canoeing and kayak as well as our horses equipped with international standard equipment’s; Our local tour guides are part of our company and will be sensitive to your cultural differences and sensitivity and Our Ecopia food would prepare a clean food and picking.

Ecommerce

Eljojofe e.v. community products of food and cosmetics are sold in Ethiopia, in European Union and Switzerland through ecopia www.ecopia-shop.com. During the Covid19 outbreak, the online shop of Ecopia was not able to fulfil the 200% increase of demand/request of online sales in Europe for its fresh and processed food from Ethiopia and herbal medicinal plant cosmetics and other natural products for Ethiopian and European market.

The crisis has shown the existing Ethiopian supply chain systems are running on bulky and dated equipment, limiting the flexibility and efficiency in the supply and demand aspect of agriculture and forest products.

The aim of this project is to develop a software program and mobile app with voice recognition, which will integrate ecommerce and the farmers through an agriculture product resources management system platform. This will be done by using the existing digital database of Ecopia farmers’ survey and traceability codes developed over the past 13 years. Ecopia models have been approved by 5 ministries of Ethiopian governmental authorities that are involved in the process of authorisation in the food value chain. The software will provide the farmers and the cooperatives digital identification and the ability to participate actively in a system that enables real-time tracking of suppliers inventory and production parameters.

Social Start-up Companies

In view of supporting our incubation centres in the communitie, we are in the process of establishing a fund for our women and men youth to incubate their social start-up companies in agro processing in Ethiopia.

With our fund we will support seed and start up social companies in Ethiopia.

The focus of the fund is two:

  • first fund will be focusing on establishing of the digital platform for processing of agriculture products in Ethiopia. This will support our communities to minimise the loss of post harvesting as well as reach the market with their stories directly.
  • Secondly establishing food or cosmetics or herbal medicinal processing company in the urban side of Ethiopia.
We want to empower the youth to added value in their products and develop also services for the communities with the platform. We are going to host our crowdfunding in April 2021 and we would be glad if you could join us. If you want to have more information on our project please contact our partner Ecopia in Germany info@ecopia.de

Ecopia Database

Ecopia aims to depict the value chain of its products and services and exemplify the processes involved as transparent as possible. The Ecopia database contains detailed information about ingredients, regional information as well as information about the processing itself. The database was developed in order to protect the consumers and at a later stage to serve as an electronic marketplace in the form of a mobile reversed auction.

Incubation centers

Ecopia with support of NGO partners has established rural incubation center for farmer entrepreneur. The incubation center are run by local Ecopia staff and provide processing platforms for rural entrepreneurs. Ecopia also runs trainings on managing and marketing rural products.

Green Academy Africa feature on ELJOJOFE

Green Academy Africa's goal is to provide feasible infrastructure reforms to enable green urbanization. We aim to improve existing infrastructure beginning a secondary school in Yayu, Ethiopia, to demonstrate that green and sustainable infrastructure doesn’t always mean that one has to start from scratch. As an example, with renovated sanitary facilities, female students will be able to attend school more regularly which up until now, has caused most female students to stay home when they are on their period, because of a lack of hygienic facilities at school. In the long run, our goal is to build schools in Africa from the ground up with sustainability and environmental compatibility in mind.

Green Academies, spearheaded by UNESCO and with the generous help of the Ministry of Science and Technology Ethiopia, are based on the following five pillars:

  • Rainwater harvesting and utilisation
  • Waste management including grey and black water recycling
  • Clean Energy supply applications
  • Biomass production (in form of a school garden for food, fuel, or amenity purposes)
  • A youth club as the underlying essential capacity building element and to empower youth for action.

The project will start with the installation of rainwater harvesting capabilities, to give 1000 students access to water on campus. Once all the pillars are implemented, the school will meet all of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined by the UN. With schools being a focal point of any community, the new Green Academy serves as a central and reliable provision of clean water and electricity, as well as a learning platform for the members of the community to empower themselves to become more green and sustainable citizens.
